Re-use Lazzari Theatre in Livorno
A cultural hub in an abandoned Art Nouveau building
Livorno is a Tuscan waterfront city. The historic centre is filled with well-constructed and highly refined liberty style buildings, such as the Lazzeri Theatre.
They offer evidence of the city’s happier years.
As part of an agreement between private operators and the municipal government, a competition was organised to design a multipurpose cultural centre open to the entire city, day and night, in this long-abandoned building.
The ground floor hosts a music store, a bar and a restaurant. The interior resembles a covered plaza, easily accessed by crossing the large portals of the building’s main façades.
Inside the former fly tower is a vertical library that develops around a staircase wrapped in books. The balcony of the former cinema features a long counter of video terminals and an information point. On the uppermost level, a terrace, conference hall, exhibition room and bar offer views over the city.
