Atalanta Stadium
A bright polycarbonate “donut” surrounded by greenery in Bergamo
This project for the Bergamo Stadium is part of a vaster proposal to redevelop a peripheral urban area situated at the crossroads of the most important infrastructures leading into the city.
Designed to host up to 30,000 spectators, the new stadium was conceived as a cavea excavated into the ground, immersed in a large sports park. A translucid roof appears to float above its green lawns; a virtual ring with an unusual form wraps the playing field in a sort of luminous belt.
This form, innovative for its time, plays a twofold role: it protects the stands and serves as a virtual screen that offers a chance to watch and promote events taking place inside the stadium from a distance through the projection of lights, shadows and moving images. Recognisable from afar, it functions as an attraction to those crossing the territory. It is a virtual sign; an innovative territorial landmark in this city’s peri-urban landscape.
